Getting to Know Me: Brenton McWilliams, Gulf Shores Attorney

Author: Brenton McWilliams

For my first post, I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to you. I’m delving a little deeper than the bio on the homepage to talk about my life outside of being a lawyer, the experience I bring to work for my clients and my philosophy as a lawyer.

I live in Orange Beach, Alabama with my wonderful and talented wife, Crawford, and my two dogs Shelby and Pickles. I’m a two time graduate of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I have a J.D. from the school of law. Before that, I attended the university’s business school graduating with a degree in finance.

When I’m not working, I enjoy going to the beach, traveling and cooking. My wife and I both love Alabama football. On Saturdays in the fall, if we’re not at the game in Tuscaloosa, you can usually find us at GT’s on the Bay screaming for the Tide. In the summer, we enjoy hosting friends and family from out of town. I’m an occasional fisher and hunter at my family’s property in Wilcox County. When I have time, I enjoy speculative trading with stocks and foreign currency.

I’ve had a lot of great accomplishments in my career which demonstrate the experience I bring to work for my clients. I’ve split my time between litigation and transactional work. Inside the courtroom, I’ve spent most of my time in circuit court representing both plaintiffs and defendants in litigation. Outside the courtroom, I’ve advised buyers or sellers in commercial real estate transactions totaling over twenty-six million dollars ($26M). I was appointed as a Deputy Attorney General to represent the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) with right-of-way acquisition. As part of my representation of ALDOT, I led a large project acquiring approximately 12 miles of right-of-way involving over 160 property owners. On that project, I personally completed over 35 condemnation cases in court from filing to final order.

I was appointed as the city attorney for a municipality outside of Tuscaloosa. I helped them out with some of the many issues municipalities encounter including preparing the bid package and overseeing the bid process for a public works contract, negotiating an ongoing business license dispute with a conglomerate auto parts manufacturer and providing advice on matters related to an adjoining industrial development park.

In my work for an industrial construction contractor, I reviewed over 100 contracts from beginning to end. The average length of each contract was probably around 50 pages with some going over 200 pages. As a result, I’ve become very familiar with common contract terms. Nowadays, when I’m presented with a question from a client about a contract, I typically have a good idea of what’s in the contract before I even read it. I also usually know exactly what to look for without reading the entire contract.

Nonetheless, the relationships I’ve built and the service I’ve rendered for my clients are my greatest sources of pride. I offer my clients loyalty, competent representation and diligent preparation. I make my client’s best interests the primary concern. I subscribe to the Rotary motto: service above self. My goal is to finish my career proud of the service I’ve done for others. I like to know that when I’ve gone to sleep at night I’ve done everything in my power to help people.

For the sake of simplicity, I’ve only listed a few practice areas on the homepage of my website, but I take work in many other areas. If you have an issue and you aren’t sure if I can help, please call me anyway. If I can’t help you, I would be happy to do my best to find another attorney who can. My office is on Highway 59 at 3145 Gulf Shores Pkwy in Gulf Shores, Alabama. You can reach me by phone at (251) 215-9275.
